Sand Hollow Paddle Boarding & Bass Fishing

By: Airhead SUP Ambassador, J.B. Spilker

Sand Hollow paddleboard bass fishing is epic. This is a report on my awesome adventure on my new Airhead SUP (Stand Up Paddle) boardbass fishing on Sand Hollow to help you on your next trip. Here’re the details of this trip, and how I used a Paddle Board to catch a half dozen un-harassed spring bass in only an hour of fishing. Included in this post are the baits I used, a map of where I found bass, and a video of the action to help you get dialed in and “Kraken” bass. Enjoy!

Sand Hollow Paddle Boarding Fishing Trip

My trip to Sand Hollow on my Airhead SUP was awesome! There was a short window of opportunity for me to get out on the water before I had to head into work. This trip on my paddle board made for an awesome start for my work day especially when I "Kraked" a few bass. Here’re all the logistics of what transpired in this short hour and fifteen minutes of fishing.

Paddle board bass fishing can be a little tricky when navigating the weather on a big body of water. I tried to go out earlier in the week but it was incredibly too windy to launch the Airhead SUP. Paying attention to the weather can really make a big difference, and turn an awesome trip into a crappy one really fast. Luckily, I found a window of calm early one morning and launched.

Sand Hollow Paddle Board Bass Fishing can get you into place’s bass boats can’t reach. Which makes for some great fishing!

Sand Hollow Paddle Boarding Gear Used

I only needed a few things to get things Kraken on Sand Hollow Paddle Board bass fishing. Here’s a description of the baits that caught fish, my Airhead SUP setup, and some additional info that helped make this trip successful with these items.

Keitech Casting Jig

The Green Pumpkin Pepper ½ oz Keitech jig caught more fish than anything else. I also used a Green Pumpkin Fire Keitech Crazy Flapper for a trailer on the jig. The key was to just let the jig and trailer soak on the bottom, and slowly hop and pull it along. Check out the video below to see how I used this bait in action. It’s definitely one of my favorite jigs set ups even though it might be a little more spendy than most.

Jackall Flick Shake Worm

The Green Pumpkin Pepper Jackall Flick Shake worm also proved its worth on this trip. I just rigged the flick shake up wacky style on a 1/8 oz wacky jig head. Letting the flick shake worm fall to the bottom, and lightly shaking it along seemed to work best. This wacky flick shake set up is a great finesse style presentation when sight fishing for bass, or even when the bites get tough.

Airhead iSUP 1138

I used the biggest fishing model paddle board that Airhead SUP makes: the 1138 Bonefish. It was ridiculously stable. The extra pontoon’s on the side prevented it from rocking much while I was on the board. It was perfect for maneuvering around and making cast’s at different angles and positions.

Another key piece of equipment that helped me was a waterproof cell phone bag. Having a phone around my neck helped me stay on top of my game, so I wasn’t late for work. Also, make sure you are wearing a good paddling life jacket, and a leash! I got in trouble for not being safe on my last trip. You never know what could happen while you are out on the water.

Paddle Board Bass Fishing proved to be awesome on Sand Hollow. Nothing better to start your morning than a good bass fishing selfie!

Sand Hollow Paddle Boarding Report

The fishing was awesome, and the scenery is always epic at Sand Hollow. On my first cast I connected on a nice largemouth, and that set the tone for the morning. All the bass I caught were right around the 2 lbs class. The bass seemed to be still hanging shallow after finishing up with the spawn.

This time of year fish spread out all over which can make it challenging. The key was to just keep covering water. I quickly became frustrated fishing shallow after missing a couple in the thick cover, so I made a cast out deep and connected again on the jig. A perfect example of how spread out the bass can be. Here’s a picture of a one of these bass chilling on the Airhead SUP after sucking down my jig.

Sand Hollow Paddle Board bass fishing produced this nice fish. He sucked my jig up in about 35 feet of water.

I paddled out to the red rock island, and decided to start throwing the jig around the rocks. This proved to be a good decision, and “kraked” another bass on the Airhead SUP. This area on Sand Hollow is blocked from boating traffic, but open to paddle boarders! I felt like I was catching fish that hadn’t been beat up during the spring from all the bass boats and tournaments.

Paddle Board Trip Highlight

One of my favorite moments was when fishing up shallow on the red rock island. I took my paddle board right up into the reeds with no drama’s and immediately spotted a bass. Kneeling down, I made a cast to where I saw the bass sitting with the Flick Shake Worm. After a couple shakes of the rod tip, I felt the line tick and set the hook on another bass. It’s so rewarding to be able to sneak up on fish, and then turn around and catch them. It was the perfect close to a good morning of fishing.
