Chad LaChance - Why You Should Try Fishing from a SUP

There is a progression in angling. It starts innocently enough with standing on the side of the lake, casting out from one spot and hoping a fish comes by and makes your day. As we grow as anglers, we start moving around the bank more, sampling casting spots until we find one that our target fish apparently prefer on that day. We also begin to notice that our tackle needs to be mobile along with us, and at the same time, our tackle has also grown in volume; we have more stuff to carry to match our angling situations, and we are strategically looking for fish. If the old saying is true that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water, good anglers will seek out that 10%.

I once heard fly fishing described as dancing with fish, and while that may be a bit of a stretch, there is no denying that pursuing fish with fly tackle is more, say, graceful than with conventional gear. There is a certain rhythm, flow, and timing to casting a fly and when done well, the cast is a thing of of effortless beauty. I don’t know about you, but in my mind many of those same fluffy adjectives also come to mind about stand-up paddleboarding, so it stands to reason that the two activities would pair well. After a few years of fly fishing from iSUP’s I can say unequivocally that they do in fact compliment each other in a way that should be experienced.

In my mind, one of the best things about stand-up paddleboarding is the simplicity of it. Because I’m a professional angler by trade, normal days on the water for me typically involve an actual boat of some sort, tons of fishing tackle, sonar, GPS, and a pile of other fishy paraphernalia. Even on those river days where we’re wading, I still end up with as much stuff as I can carry on my back; there’s just something about being prepared for whatever fishing condition I might encounter that gives me confidence…and confidence catches fish.

Introduce Your Dog to SUP

By: Airhead SUP Ambassador, Chad LaChance

I love my dog. I love paddleboarding. My dog loves me and paddleboarding…and that’s a very happy thing. In fact, I rarely paddleboard without my dog these days unless it’s a hardcore fishing trip. Why? Because my dog gives me That Look whenever I grab the SUP…and how can I say no to a beloved companion that loves to paddle as much as I do?

Funny how the act of writing will teach us about the things we are writing about. For instance, I started this blog a half dozen times; each time I scrapped it and started over. Why, you ask? Because by the time I was a few hundred words deep, I realized each time that my content was not specific, instead ending up sounding like a fishing piece I’d write about any floating vessel I might fish from, not just an inflatable stand-up paddleboard.

And therein lies the beauty of the iSUP; it allows us basically the same fishing access as a kayak or fishing boat, but with vastly improved portability and a tiny fraction of the cost.

As a professional angler and TV show host, I get the ol’ “what’s your favorite…” question all the time. Could be lure, rod, reel or whatever…peeps want to know the fav’s. When pressed to name my favorite place to ISUP fish and frolic, I can easily name a winner…
