10 Incredible SUP Destinations for Winter

Winter has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere. That means days are shorter and a whole lot colder. For skiers, it’s great news. But it’s not so good for those who love to standup paddleboard (SUP). However, there’s no need to wait until spring or summer to hit the water. Why not travel to where it’s warm and soak up some rays? What is more, iSUPs are a breeze to travel with. They are easy to check at the airport and they actually roll up into a duffel bag. (Be sure to check out our Top Tips for Easy Air Travel with Your iSUP too).

Hawaii

Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is believed to have started in Hawaii in the 1960s. It was the “Beach Boys of Waikiki” that made its fame by paddling out with their longboards so that tourists could take pics. By the 1990s a surf pioneer named Laird Hamilton popularized SUPs. Today, standup paddleboarding is the fastest growing watersport in the US (and in many other countries too).

One of the best spots in Hawaii for a iSUP is at Sunset Beach on the north shore of Oahu. We also happen to be fond of the more remote Nā Pali Coast. So much so that we even named our first iSUP after it!

Bahamas

The Bahamas are a place where dreams come true for iSUPs fans. There are 120 long miles of islands with wonderfully warm and clear water. Abacos is the cool spot for SUPs. It is where you can glide the deep aqua green ocean of colorful reefs and striking marine life such as sea turtles, unique crabs and parrotfish.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta is the perfect place under the sun for iSUPs enthusiasts. The waters are extraordinarily calm and soothing. You can glide easily along the waters of Bandera Bay while catching a glimpse of humpback whales, sea turtles and dolphins.

South Africa

South Africa offers a variety of waves and some striking country. Some of the ideal spots for iSUP fans are near Cape Town at Blouberg and Sunset Beath. Another popular location is Langebaan Lagoon, it is known for being a great spot for first-timers and beginners.

Chorrillos, Peru

To many, Peru may sound like an improbable spot. But it’s actually where Chorrillos hosted the World SUP & Paddleboard Championships. Chorrillos is south of Lima and offers many great beaches for the novice and experienced.

Namotu Island, Fiji

Touring Fiji is always a memorable experience. Their culture and people are both fascinating and beautiful. Their beaches are no different and Namotu Island is exclusively located by all of Fijis best breaks. That includes the famous Cloudbreak!

St. Lucia, Caribbean

There is nothing quite like St. Lucia. It is the ideal combo of quiet waters, lush scenery and private bays for ultimate sightseeing on an iSUP. Experience the great island life of continual rainforests, the Twin pitons (twin peaks) and the pristine blue-green waters of the area.

Lanazarote, UK

This is an often missed location by many because it is near the popular Fuerteventra . So if you like privacy and quiet, Lanzarote offers the peacefulness and flat water. And for enthusiasts, you can also find world class wave riding adventure that you have never experienced before. There are numerous reef breaks, rocky shores, and crystal clear lagoons that are unforgettable. There is also some nice down winding.

Morocco

Morocco is renowned for its challenging waves and long liquid walls. But it also offers a gentler experience for those who like their waves quiet. Some of the best locations in Morocco are in Mirleft. It is known for its remarkable beaches, points and reefs, beach breaks and consistent swells.

Galapagos Islands

A great spot for wave-hunters and novices alike, the Galapagos Islands are an iSUP paddler's heaven. Not only are the waves great but there is an abundance of land and sea life such as rays, sea turtles, sea lions, penguins, reef sharks, blue-footed boobies and marine iguanas that lounge on the rocks nearby.
